Nem lesz hát idegen számunkra történetünk címszereplője, a vagyonos párizsi polgár, a gyógyíthatatlan hipochondriában szenvedő Argan, aki a küszöbét átlépő valamennyi „csodadoktor” által meghatározott, nem ritkán egymásnak ellentmondó orvosi instrukciókat szigorúan betartva él. A szánnivalóan tragikus főhős ezúttal kacagtatóan komikusnak bizonyul, gyógyíthatatlannak tetsző betegségénél pedig már csak hozzátartozói keserítik jobban a haláltól rettegő családapa mindennapjait.
