Barátjának hisz és pénzzel halmoz el egy lecsúszott grófot, csodás lakomát rendez egy özvegy grófnőnek, akinél komikus igyekezettel próbálja megkedveltetni magát. Lányát is nemes embernek szánja, de a lány szerelmének furfangos inasa látványos cselt talál ki, hogy a rangkórságban szenvedő Jourdain eszén túljárjanak. E nagyszabású tréfa csúcspontja a vígjáték irodalom egyik emlékezetes jelenete: a "mammamusi avatás".
