A nagy boldogságot beárnyékolta, hogy a Királynénak az volt a kívánsága, hogy a Tündér kertjében termett gyönyörűséges barackból ehessen. A Király hiába figyelmeztette feleségét, hogy annak nagy az ára, hiszen a Tündér a barackért a gyermeküket kéri majd cserébe, a Királyné hajthatatlan volt. Meg is született a gyermek, egy gyönyörű kislány, akit Barackvirágnak neveztek el. Tizenöt éves volt Barackvirág, amikor egyszerre megszólalt a Tündér hangja, emlékeztette a Királyt az ígéretére, és elrepítette Barackvirágot. Barackvirág a Tündér palotájába került. Később a Tündér egy Herceget csalt a palotájába. A testnélküli Tündérnek az volt a terve, hogy megszerezze Barackvirág gyönyörűséges alakját és a Herceget elcsábítsa. A Tündér ezen kívül is még egy különös bosszút szánt Barackvirágnak...Bonyodalom, küszködés, emberi megpróbáltatások, tündér ármánykodások - ahogy Babits jellemzi ezt a csoda-mesét: "Ez igazi tündérmese - mindenféle varázslatokkal és rejtelmekkel."
