A tizenhárom éves Herkulest bántja, hogy éhezik a családja. A fiatal fiú erősebb, mint bárki a faluban, de hiába dolgozik akár tíz ember helyett is, attól még nem lesz több termés a földeken. Herkules elhatározza, hogy elindul az istenekhez segítséget kérni. Azonban az Olümposz kapuján nem lehet csak úgy belépni, előbb teljesíteni kell tizenkét emberfeletti, világmegváltó hőstettet. És aki a próbákat kiállja, istenné válik, és átléphet a kapun. Herkules nem ismer lehetetlent, nekiveselkedik a próbatételeknek.
Azonban az istenek nem akarják körükben látni a fiatal hőst – mindent elkövetnek, hogy Herkules elbukjon.
