Hoffmann meséi a férfiremények meséje. A férfiélet különböző stádiumaiból és azokról szólva. Mese Olympiáról, a bálványról, akit látványa, a bennünk keltett csoda képzete, az idea miatt szeretünk meg, s észre sem vesszük lelketlen, élettelen báb-mivoltát. Mese Antóniáról, a soha el nem érhető lélekről, akinek valódi lénye már a (egy) másik világban van, dalaival is oda vágyva él, tőlünk távol, csak fizikailag közel, lelkileg már sehol. Ő a második elérhetetlenség. És mese Giuliettáról, akit látszólag bárki, bármikor elér, megkap és talán éppen ezért soha senki sem valójában, lelketlen lélekfaló. Mese ez Hoffmann éretlen és valójában céltalan, kiérleletlen vágyairól, akit hiába buktat el sorra az ördögi Lindorf tanácsos óvó, vagy gátló alakja, nem tanul semmiből. Marad, ahogy elkezdte, egy örökké vágyakozó férfi.
