A Pompeiust legyőző Caesar épp hatalma csúcsán van, a római nép isteníti, ám félő, hogy Caesar egyeduralomra tör. A szenátorok ezért összeesküvést szőnek a meggyilkolására, s ennek vezéralakjai Cassius és Brutus lesznek. A vészjósló jelek ellenére Caesar megjelenik a Szenátusban 44. március idusán, ám az összeesküvők ledöfik – de ezzel polgárháborús helyzetbe sodorják a birodalmat. Fel is áll a két tábor: a Caesar-pártiakat Antonius és Octavius, a köztársaság híveit pedig Cassius és Brutus vezetik. A személyes indulatok, politikai érdekek és hatalmi játszmák felkorbácsolódnak – s így, a világtörténelem egyik legkritikusabb időszakában érkezünk el a philippi síkra, a két párt végső csatájának színhelyére...
