A darab témáját Brecht előtt többen is feldolgozták. Az első egységes zenés játékot John Gay és John Cristopher Pepusch írta. Londonban akkoriban beszédtéma volt a betörő Jack Shepard története, aki megszökött a börtönből, s akit az ugyancsak betörő Jonathan Wild árult el a rendőrségnek, és akit fel is akasztottak.
A darabot először 1930-ban mutatta be a Vígszínház, azóta már a Cápa-dal, az Ágyú-dal vagy a Salamon-dal ismerős dallamként csendül fel sokak számára.
